The performing arts are an important part of the Donna Klein Jewish Academy curriculum. Through the performing arts we instill a desire to learn.
Drama assists in building social skills, character development, discipline, self-esteem, and self-confidence. It provides the student with an opportunity to develop self-awareness.
In classes throughout the year we use improvisational games as learning tools. Improvisational games have a multitude of benefits, such as helping the student improve his or her problem solving skills; creative and critical thinking skills; and oral communicating skills.
Storytelling, Reader’s Theatre, and Radio Drama are taught to the different grades incorporating their curriculum. For example, fifth-graders use the art of storytelling to present a folk tale.
We have such an exciting year ahead of us! Our all school production this year is Into the Woods. The music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim; the book’s author is James Lapine. This is sure to please audiences of all ages and provide a performance outlet for our lower school, middle school, and high school students! The auditioning process will be covered in class as part of our first unit as an introduction to the theatre, and to help any of those students wishing to audition.
Please contact me if you have any questions about our program.
